In Memoriam: Herbert Blomstedt (1927 – 2026)
Maestro Herbert Blomstedt passed away on November 4, 2026. His music has shaped me more than I can put into words. He conducted for more than seven decades, and to the very end he served the score with humility, clarity and quiet joy, never putting himself ahead of the composer. Listening to him taught me that greatness can be gentle, and that a lifetime of devotion to one craft is something beautiful in itself.
Together with Klaus Tennstedt, he has been my most-listened conductor on Apple Music every year, and I was even one of his top 100 listeners there. His music has been with me for a long time, through all the ups and downs. Since coming to the US, I have been fortunate to attend several of his concerts.
If you don't know who he is, check this (if your German is good). I highly recommend all of his recordings with the San Francisco Symphony, also with the Staatskapelle Dresden. Listen to his Nielsen, Brahms, Bruckner, Sibelius and Richard Strauss, etc.
Thank you, Maestro. RIP.
